Vanadium

Vanadium source generally used as ferrovanadium (FeV) for strength and wear resistance.

Vanadium

Vanadium is generally used in foundries as ferrovanadium (FeV); the common grade contains about 80 percent vanadium. It is a strong carbide former and is added in small amounts to steel and alloyed cast iron to raise strength, toughness, hardness and wear resistance.

In steel castings it has a grain-refining effect. In alloyed cast iron it forms hard vanadium carbides that contribute to wear resistance. Because vanadium can promote pearlite and carbide tendency in ductile iron, its use there should be limited and the amount coming from the charge as a trace element should also be considered.

The addition rate is set by the foundry according to the alloy grade. An analysis certificate per lot with aluminium, silicon and carbon residuals can be requested.

Typical chemical analysis (%)
