Alloys and Inoculants
Strontium Inoculant
Sr-bearing FeSi inoculant for chill control in grey iron at low addition rates.
Strontium inoculant is a ferrosilicon-based inoculant containing strontium. It is used at low addition rates, mainly for chill control in grey cast iron.
Because it is effective at low addition rates, dosing must be precise. Over-addition can cause undesirable side effects, so the foundry should set the addition according to the base iron analysis, casting section and pouring temperature. A trial pour before full adoption is recommended.
Because the inoculation effect fades over time, the addition is made as close to pouring as practical. Grain size is selected according to the addition method. An analysis certificate per lot can be requested.
Typical chemical analysis (%)
| Silicon (Si) | 63-80 |
|---|---|
| Strontium (Sr) | 0,6-1,1 |
| Calcium (Ca) | ≤ 0,15 |
| Aluminium (Al) | ≤ 0,5 |
Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
