Carburizer for Grey Iron
Carburizer used for carbon adjustment in grey and pig iron casting charges.
Pig carburizer is used to raise the carbon level of molten metal in grey (flake graphite) cast iron and general foundry charges. Carbon deficiency in charges with a high steel scrap share is corrected with this type of carburizer. Calcined petroleum coke and graphite based types are available.
Graphite-based products contain less sulphur and nitrogen and dissolve faster. Because sulphur and nitrogen limits in grey iron are more tolerant than in ductile iron, the suitable type is chosen according to the application and cost balance. For ductile iron and thin-section castings, a product with low S and N should be preferred.
Grain size is selected according to the addition method. Coarse grains are added with the furnace charge, fine grains onto the molten bath or into the ladle. Recovery depends on temperature, stirring intensity and grain size.
