Tungsten

Tungsten source, generally used as ferrotungsten (FeW) for alloying in castings.

Tungsten

Tungsten is generally used in foundries as ferrotungsten (FeW) and contains roughly 70-80 percent tungsten. It is added to tool steel, high-speed steel and heat-resistant alloy steel castings, and to some wear-resistant alloyed cast irons, to raise hardness, hot hardness and wear resistance.

Tungsten is a dense element with a high melting point. Ferrotungsten should therefore be added early in the charge, and grain size and addition temperature should be selected to ensure dissolution. Its density gives it a tendency to sink to the bottom, so sufficient holding time and stirring are important.

The addition rate is set by the foundry according to the alloy grade. An analysis certificate per lot with residuals such as carbon, phosphorus and sulphur can be requested.
