Alloys and Inoculants

Ferrosulphur (FeS)

Iron sulphide alloy used to adjust the sulphur level in grey cast iron.

Ferrosulphur (FeS)

Ferrosulphur is an iron-sulphide-based alloy used to raise the sulphur content of molten cast iron in a controlled way. It is preferred especially in induction furnaces, with charges that have a high steel scrap share and very low sulphur.

In flake graphite (grey) cast iron, a certain sulphur level forms manganese sulphide nuclei together with manganese, which increases inoculation efficiency, reduces chill tendency and improves machinability. The target sulphur value and the Mn/S balance depend on the casting grade.

Because sulphur increases magnesium consumption in ductile iron, this alloy is not used in ductile iron charges. The addition rate should be calculated from the initial melt analysis.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Sulfur (S) 28-32
Iron (Fe) 65-70
Carbon (C) ≤ 0,10
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0,025
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0,2
Copper (Cu) ≤ 0,20

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
