Lanthanum Inoculant
Lanthanum (rare earth) bearing FeSi inoculant that raises nodule count in ductile iron.
Lanthanum inoculant is a ferrosilicon-based inoculant containing rare earth elements such as lanthanum. It is used in ductile (spheroidal graphite) iron to increase graphite nucleation and nodule count and to reduce carbide formation.
Rare earth elements give strong nucleation and help reduce carbide tendency in thin sections. However, the rare earth level must be kept under control, as over-addition can lead to undesirable graphite forms in heavy sections. The addition rate should be set according to section thickness and magnesium treatment conditions.
The addition can be made in the ladle, in the stream or in the mould, and applying it close to pouring preserves effectiveness. Information on composition and suitable grain size is available on request, and an analysis certificate per lot can be requested.
