Perlite (Slag Coagulant)
Grey perlite (grade 0) used as a slag coagulant in iron and steel melting.
Perlite is a glassy volcanic rock. Grey, fine-grained (grade 0) perlite is used as a slag coagulant. Sprinkled on the molten metal surface, it binds liquid slag into a dry mass that is easy to skim and reduces metal loss with the slag.
It is usually spread evenly over the bath after melting, before deslagging. Thanks to its low density it also acts as a cover that reduces heat loss at the ladle surface. The amount is adjusted to slag volume and bath temperature.
As a dusty material it should be stored dry and respiratory protection is advisable during use.
