Coal Dust
Carbonaceous additive that improves casting surface finish in green sand moulding.
Coal dust is a carbonaceous additive mixed into green sand together with bentonite. As it heats up during pouring, it forms a thin lustrous carbon layer on the mould surface; this layer reduces metal penetration and sand burn-on and gives a cleaner, smoother casting surface.
It is widely used in grey and ductile iron. Its level in the sand system is tracked through loss on ignition (LOI) and volatile matter; because an excess can cause gas defects and lower permeability, the addition rate is adjusted to the system.
Because of its dusty nature, it should be stored in a dry, covered area, and respiratory protection is advisable during handling.
