Resins and Hardeners
Furan Resin
Furan resin used for cold-set (no-bake) sand mould and core production.
Furan resin is a cold-setting (no-bake) mould and core binder that is mixed with sand and hardens at room temperature together with an acid hardener. It is widely used for medium and large parts, single pieces and small series in cast iron, steel and non-ferrous casting.
Resin addition is typically around 1 percent of sand weight, and the hardener is set as a percentage of resin weight. Setting time depends on ambient temperature and hardener level. Sand temperature, moisture and mixer quality affect the result.
The resin type is chosen according to the metal poured: low-nitrogen or nitrogen-free resins are preferred for steel because nitrogen can cause gas defects. Used sand can be reclaimed, which lowers binder consumption. The product should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, and personal protective equipment should be used.
