Resins and Hardeners
Furan Resin Hardeners
Sulphonic acid based catalysts that cure furan resin.
Furan resin hardeners are acid catalysts that react with furan resin in the sand and set the binder at room temperature. They are generally sulphonic acid based, such as para-toluene sulphonic acid (PTSA) or benzene sulphonic acid (BSA).
The hardener type and level determine setting time. Stronger hardeners are preferred in cold weather and milder ones in hot weather. Sands with a high acid demand (for example alkaline sands) may need more hardener. The level is set as a percentage of resin weight and should be verified with trial mixes.
Being acidic and corrosive, it must be kept away from skin and eyes, and personal protective equipment should be used. Contact with metal equipment and long storage in open vessels should be avoided, and the product should be kept in a closed container.
