Polystyrene Pattern Coating
Gas-permeable refractory coating applied to lost foam and polystyrene patterns.
Polystyrene pattern coating is a refractory coating applied to the polystyrene (foam) pattern surface in the lost foam process. It forms a barrier between pattern and sand, prevents the sand surface from being disturbed by the metal and reproduces the pattern surface on the casting.
When the foam pattern meets the metal it vaporises, and the gases must escape through the coating. The gas permeability of the coating is therefore critical; a layer that is too thick or has low permeability can cause gas defects. Layer thickness should follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Application is generally done by dipping, and the coating must be dried thoroughly before the pattern is filled with sand. Coating the whole pattern evenly is important for surface quality.
