Foundry Sands
Silica Sand
The most widely used silica (SiO2) based foundry sand in green sand and chemically bonded moulding.
Silica sand consists mainly of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and is the most widely used moulding sand in foundries. Being naturally available and economical, it is preferred in grey and ductile iron, steel and non-ferrous casting moulds.
It is used in bentonite-bonded green sand systems and as base sand for furan, alpha set and other chemically bonded moulds and cores. Grain shape, grain distribution, moisture and fines content determine mould permeability and surface finish; these values are selected for the application.
Different sand types and grain distributions are available on request. Because fine silica dust is hazardous to breathe, dust control and respiratory protection should be applied when handling dry sand.
Typical chemical analysis (%)
| Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) | ≥ 99,0 |
|---|---|
| Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) | ≤ 0,07 |
| Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) | ≤ 0,6 |
Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
