Foundry Sands
Olivine Sand
A magnesium-iron silicate based, silica-free sand used in steel and manganese steel casting.
Olivine sand is a natural foundry sand composed of magnesium and iron silicate (forsterite based). As it contains no free silica, it lowers the silicosis risk in mould preparation and prevents metals containing basic oxides, such as manganese steel, from reacting with silica.
Its thermal expansion is lower and smoother than silica, which helps reduce expansion-related defects on the mould surface. It is used as mould and core sand in steel and manganese steel casting.
Grain distribution is supplied in different options on request. Binder choice and acid demand value must be compatible with the chemical system in use; please contact us for selection.
Typical chemical analysis (%)

|---|---|
| Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) | 41-43 |
| Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) | 7-8 |
| Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) | ≤ 0,8 |
