Foundry Sands
Chromite Sand
A sand used on mould surfaces in steel casting for its high refractoriness and thermal conductivity.
Chromite sand is a highly refractory foundry sand obtained from chromite ore (FeCr2O4) containing iron and chromium oxide. With a higher thermal conductivity than silica, it extracts heat quickly, which speeds solidification at hot spots and reduces metal penetration and burn-on.
It is mainly used as facing sand or chill sand on the mould and core surfaces in contact with metal in steel and manganese steel casting. As it contains no silica, it is preferred where silica-related sand-metal reactions occur.
Grain distribution is supplied in different options on request. As chromite is heavier than silica, the density difference should be taken into account in handling and filling calculations.
Typical chemical analysis (%)
| Chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) | ≥ 46 |
|---|---|
| Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) | ≤ 30 |
| Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) | ≤ 16 |
| Magnesium oxide (MgO) | ≤ 11 |
| Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) | ≤ 1 |
| Calcium oxide (CaO) | ≤ 0,3 |
Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
